bump...

Many of you (I don't know who you are, if you're out there at all) may have heard of John Scofield. Well, he's this terribly amazing jazz/fusion guitarist who always seems to round up these terrific bands for his projects. I'm serious. His music is really groovy from a non-technical standpoint. But when you get into the nuts and bolts of it (I'm thinking outside the box with that phrase) he's a musical genius. He uses empty space as much as actual notes to create a great vibe and feel. And those drummers he comes up with! Where do they come from?

He's an older gentleman. When I say gentleman I don't use the term lightly. Almost every picture of him I've seen of him shows him with his wedding ring on. So, you say, "Well Eric Clapton always wears his too.... So it's not that special." Yes, he does. Kudos. But I'd rather look up to Scofield because of his obvious humility. And his scientist look. He's got to be a smart guy. Music, art, albums, shows, publicity shots like that don't come out of a non-thinker.

And he's played with everyone. Any jazz guy you can think of, he's played with them. I mean, if they weren't dead long before his time. But he just put out a new album and he has teamed up with John Mayer (among many others) on this project. John Mayer? My respect for him just jumped up 8 or 10 notches. I'll have to listen to more of his stuff. I guess it's worthy of my time.

And it's not just the wedding ring that shows his devotion to his family. His website features comments about his daughter. His liner notes are genrally quite sparse, and usually only mention family and close collaborators. And his wife has been his executive producer on most of his albums. He hasn't let his fame and acclaim go to his head or interrupt his family life, which is obviously a priority. It's really admirable.

I'm glad I noticed this today. Most of you probably know that I got married a little over a week ago. We got back from a honeymoon in Mexico on Thursday. It was really great. It was a big success, and it was much more pleasant than I expected. The actual wedding I mean. I kind of dread large social functions and wasn't looking forward to being the center of attention and in a tux. Not exactly my element. But I did well, and luckily Nikki handled most of the attention. I just stood by, smiling and trying not to look out-of-place. It was beautiful. She looked really amazing all done up and fancy.

It's really nice to have a wife. To be a husband. It's great. I can't wait for us to get famous together! Not me as a performer, but famous nonetheless.
