pockets...

Yesterday I went to buy my sweetheart some homeopathic allergy medicine. She has (year-round I might add) these insufferable allergies. The poor girl is even allergic to garlic, which becomes quite difficult if we ever want to go out to eat to someplace other than Wendy's or Burger King (which I never want to do again, mind you). So I went to this natural remedy shop in Bountiful, the city I live in, and asked the sales guy if he would recommend anything. He was a pretty cool dude, and we got a bit of a conversation going.

Nikki recently realized that she was suffering (she suffers a lot, she really does) from some negative side effects of the Claritin she'd been taking. Dry inner-nose, irritability, abdominal cramps, light sleeping, etc. She researched it on the internet, and found that she isn't the only one to have dealt with this. I talked the the sales guy about this, and it led to a brief chat about the drug industry. He talked about ephedra and how it was banned by the FDA due to a hundred or so deaths over the course of more than 10 years. He talked about the number of deaths related to common pain medicine as being astronomical. It's all about money. There is too much money in aspirin and ibuprofen. Typical.

An interesting site for those who care to look.

I am a raging capitalist. I believe in opportunity, wealth, and progress. It's hard to argue against it (assuming you desire a progressive society) when you compare capitalist systems against socialist or communist systems. So, I want to make a good living as much as the next guy. I really do.

I love the album When the Pawn... by Fiona Apple. Man oh man. It is terribly moving and I relate with it so well. I don't own Tidal yet, but have plans to purchase it soon. Don't worry, this will all come together in the end. You'll see. So Fiona and her producer, Jon Brion, recorded another album that was essentially finished in 2003. However, Sony/Epic records has a different CEO than was around during the time of When the Pawn... and this new CEO has turned the focus primarily to pop and hip-hop, big money markets. This makes sense from a capitalistic point of view. But jeez, I want the new album. This album, by the way, is titled Extraordinary Machines. I really want it. But it's all about money. Ha ha ha... I'm all about money. I can't help it. It's just the way I am. But other people get in my way and cause me problems because they're the same way. What a nasty mess. Well, anyway... The guy at the vitamin counter yesterday said this:

"Well, if it were a perfect world we would probably all sit around and talk about how boring it is."

Point well taken. I shut my mouth, I bought the product from the guy making a living, and I went on my way. I guess it's all okay. I'm pretty happy, and I have plans to stay that way.

Speaking of in the news and America being the most over-prescribed country in the world, did you hear about the FDA recalling the drug Bextra?

Here's a link:

And also, I heard this on NPR this morning, that there's a new strain of staph that's resistent to penicillin type antiobiotics.

Remember when my dentist put me on amoxicyllin (sp?) after the root canal and I didn't want to take it because I didn't feel like I had an infection? But I'd already started taking it and people were telling me to stop? Well, people stopping their prescriptions in the middle of the prescription contribute to resistant viruses because some of the viruses survive and adapt to the drug. At least that's what I think happens. Interesting subjects.
